Baseball Field Specifications
Bases
A baseball field consists of 4 bases and a pitching rubber. There is first base, second base,
third base and home plate. All four bases are equally spaced apart by 90 feet. The pitching
rubber (where the pitcher delivers the ball) is exactly 60 feet 6 inches from home plate.
Outside the first and third base foul line the coach's box is located. This is where the
assistant coaches are located to help make guide the runner through the base paths.

Size
To make a full size baseball field the distance from home plate can vary. The right and left
field fences vary from about 302 feet to 355 feet at the foul poles. Center field however is
usually the farthest part in the ballpark around 400 feet.
Fast Fact- The average Major League Baseball field from right foul to left foul pole contains around 90,000 square feet.

Base/Plate Size
One of the more crucial parts of the game is the size of each base and the size of home
plate. The size of home plate matters the most of course because this is what determines the
balls and strikes in a baseball game.
The home plate is a 5 sided rubber piece that measures 17 inches by 8 1/2 by 12 by 12 by 8
1/2 inches. The other 3 bases that make up a baseball diamond are 1st base, 2nd base and
3rd base. These bases are made of canvas and are 15 inch squares.
Foul Poles
There are two foul poles on a baseball field. These
poles are usually yellow and are a vertical extension
of the right and left foul lines. These poles let an
umpire indicate if a fly ball is a home run or a foul
ball. The name of the pole is usually not interpreted
correctly because if a ball hits the foul pole the ball is
fair and not foul.
Before they changed the rule in 1920 the rule was
that a fly ball hit over the fence had to be fair all the
way until it hit the ground, thus making the foul
poles infinite. Today the rule is that the ball only has
to stay fair until it clears the fence and the ball can
go anywhere after it clears the fence.

Baseball Field Earth
A baseball field consists of a clay type dirt with a short cut grass. There are different field
patterns that vary with each field. Some fields have a dirt infield with no grass except in the
outfield. The most common field has grass in the inner part of the infield with dirt in the
outer part of the infield shown below in the picture.
Also if you are puzzled by how the grounds crew get the stripes in a field, it us quite simple.
The grounds crew uses more fertilizer on the parts that they want dark green and less on the
part that they want light green.
